The Difference Between Waiting and Trusting
One of the most difficult things about uncertainty is that it often feels like life has been put on hold. You're waiting for a message. Waiting for someone to make a decision. Waiting for things to improve. Waiting for an opportunity. Sometimes you're even waiting for yourself to feel differently.
Waiting is something we've all experienced, but the problem is that it can quietly become a way of living. When we're emotionally invested in an outcome, it's easy to start measuring life by what hasn't happened yet. Every notification grabs your attention. Every delay feels significant. Before long, life starts to revolve around a single question: Has anything changed?
I've seen this countless times through tarot readings, pendulum guidance, and spellwork. People often come to me because they feel stuck between where they are now and where they hope to be. Sometimes it's a relationship. Sometimes it's a career. Sometimes it's a fresh start after a difficult period. Whatever the situation, there's usually one thing they all have in common: They've been waiting.
Waiting isn't the same as trusting. At first, the two can feel very similar. Both involve patience. Both involve uncertainty. Both require accepting that you don't have complete control over the outcome. But emotionally, they're very different. Waiting keeps your attention on what you can't control. Trust brings your attention back to what you can.
When we're waiting, it's easy to feel as though our happiness depends on someone else making the next move. We tell ourselves we'll relax once they reply. We'll feel better once we get closure. We'll move on once we know where we stand. Before long, our emotional wellbeing becomes tied to events that are completely outside our control.
Trust doesn't mean pretending those things don't matter. It means recognising that your life is still happening while you're waiting for them. Hope is healthy. Putting your life on hold isn't.
This is one of the reasons I think tarot readings can be so valuable during periods of uncertainty. People often assume tarot exists to tell them exactly when something will happen. Sometimes timing appears in a reading, but much more often the cards help answer a different question: How do I move through this waiting more easily?
Tarot can reveal emotional patterns, fears, strengths, opportunities, and perspectives that are easy to miss when all of your attention is focused on a future outcome. Sometimes the reading isn't really about the destination. It's about helping you navigate the journey you're already on.
Pendulum guidance can help in a similar way. When your mind is constantly swinging between hope and doubt, it becomes difficult to trust your own judgement. A pendulum reading can help bring focus to specific questions instead of letting your thoughts drift endlessly between different possibilities. It doesn't remove uncertainty, but it can stop uncertainty from consuming every thought.
Spellwork has an important place here too. One reason people seek spellwork is because waiting can leave us feeling powerless. It can feel as though our future depends entirely on circumstances outside ourselves. Spellwork doesn't replace practical action, and it doesn't guarantee a particular outcome, but it can transform passive waiting into intentional participation. Instead of simply hoping something changes, you're choosing to direct your energy towards the future you want to create. Action creates momentum, even when the outcome hasn't arrived yet.
One thing I've learned is that trust isn't something that suddenly appears once life becomes certain. It's something we practise while life is still uncertain. Trust doesn't mean never having doubts, and it doesn't mean pretending everything will work out exactly as you hope. It means believing that whatever happens, you'll be able to navigate it. That you're capable of making decisions. That your life doesn't stop simply because one chapter hasn't reached its conclusion.
Waiting asks: "When will things change?". Trust asks: "How do I want to live while they're changing?"
For me, that's one of the biggest differences. None of us can control exactly how or when life unfolds, but we can choose where our attention goes. We can spend every day watching the clock, or we can continue building a life that feels meaningful regardless of how long the waiting lasts.
